How I make my closet work all year round

So I’ve never been one to pack up my winter clothes and vice-versa when the season changes. Instead, I try to get the most out of my clothes all year round. Here are a few tips on how I do it.

Layering
Layers suit my curvy shape and afford me the ability to wear summer dresses in the middle of June. I like to build up usually starting with black leggings and a black slip. From here I’ll add a dress, boots, scarf and lots of jewellery.

Complimentary colour palette
Following on from my recent capsule wardrobe post, I already have a very monochrome closet. The main exception being most of my dresses seem to be floral. Rather than buying a bunch of seasonal colours I try to bring in trend hues through accessories rather than committing to more expensive items of clothing. Choose colours that work together all year round. I like black, white, grey, blush and stripes.

Accessories
Your accessories are key to getting the most of your closet regardless of the season. Stockings. footwear and scarves can update your style while adding warmth in the cooler weather. Also trend based jewellery can be a great style update for minimal cost.

Classic pieces
Rather than cheap short lived trend pieces I try to stick to pieces that will wear out rather than trend out. Well cut blazers, denim jackets and black dresses can be worn over and over and never look out of place.

How do you get the most out of your clothes?

Store Edit: Building a capsule wardrobe at Forever New

Welcome to my new series of blogs 'Store Edit' where I pull together my favourite pieces from my go-to stores. Forever New is always top of my list for timeless pieces that age well - in particular, I have about seven of their blazers on high rotation in closet. Also, if you've been here for more than five minutes you'd be well aware that I am a fan of a monochrome palette and a capsule wardrobe that works for you. A little black dress, versatile heels, structured blazer, neutral accessories and classic basics can make getting ready each day enjoyable rather than utter torture. How we got baby to sleep through the night* **

Back when all I could do was imagine her sleeping there.  *we have no freaking idea. This post gives no real advice and is not selling a sleep program. It is purely a recount of my experience so far. ** Daisy is sleeping through at the moment. She is not teething yet but she is about to enter a leap. We are by no means under the illusion that this is forever. Daisy sleeping through the night happened by accident. We just woke up one morning and realised that she hadn't woken up. Cue the diving out of bed to check she was still breathing. We stood at the cot and grinned at each other for a really long time. The next night it happened again. The third night, she woke us up. "But Daisy," I said, "you sleep through now,". She had a bottle and went back to sleep. We haven't really worked at setting a routine but fell into one anyway. She has a bath every night, a bottle and then is either rocked to sleep or placed into her cradle in our room awake but sl...

Why I don't post photos of my kids online

There is a lot of controversy today with new advice suggesting we should ask our toddlers permission before posting photos online. While I think that is all kinds of ridiculous and the decision belongs to parents and no one else I do get asked often why I don’t share images of Daisy and now also Lucas on social media.  I was an early adopter of social media and managed accounts way before it became a job title. I’ve seen the good, the bad and downright ugly. Something that can form amazing communities can also wreck people’s lives in more ways then one. Before I had the kids Steve and I discussed what our decision would be in terms of social media. At first he didn’t mind either way but as time has gone on he is totally on board with maintaining their privacy. One question I’ve been asked was, ‘Do you not take photos of your kids? Of course I do. The photos I do post are usually just the bloopers from the 255 I’ve taken of their faces. My iCloud has about 10 000 phot...
