Holiday Guide: Port Macquarie NSW, Australia

Town Beach, Port Macquarie NSW.
Port Macquarie is one of our favourite holiday spots with beautiful beaches, plenty of restaurants and all kinds of fun activities to suit any taste.

We stayed for a week during March and were blessed with mostly warm weather but Port Macquarie is a great vacation destination no matter what time of year you choose to visit.

Check out my guide below to plan your next trip!

Things to do:

BAGO Maze and Wine it is so much fun making your way through the maze and then when you're done enjoy some wine and cheese or a coffee and other goodies.

Timbertown located 20 minutes west of Port Macquarie, is a recreation of a timber getters village from 1880-1930. With steam train rides, horse and carriage rides, whip cracking and plenty of food options, this one is a great attraction for the whole family.

The Koala Hospital is open 7 days and has free entry. The hospital rescues and rehabilitates koalas and you can get up close to see them as they recover. The hospital also works with the University of Sydney to conduct research into diseases and behaviour of koalas in the wild.

Billabong Zoo is set over 10 acres and holds over 80 species of animals, retiles and birds. I love feeding the kangaroos there and if you're adventurous you can also pat a snake!

Sea Acres Rainforest Centre is run by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and houses the Rainforest Cafe as well as the subtropical rainforest walk on an elevated boardwalk. Highly recommend this one, stunning scenery and it feels like you're a million miles away from everything. (Also note: wheelchair and stroller friendly)

We had heaps of fun at Ricardos Tomatos and Strawberries filling a bucket with delicious strawberries and afterwards head to the cafe to pick up some products and have a bite to eat.

Beaches:

Town Beach and Flynn Beach are both patrolled (always check for red and yellow flags) but there are also plenty of other options for 4WDing, fishing and surfing.

Food:

Wall of China located on Clarence Street is one of our absolute favourites and we usually go there or get takeaway twice per trip. The restaurant is very popular so be sure to book ahead and you can also order online via their website.

La Roma Restaurant is a cosy little spot situated just off the main road. With its fairy lights and mood music it creates that perfect holiday dining experience. Oh and the food is delicious - the pizza is in a class of it's own!

The Westport Club has bistro and cafe options with stunning water views.

Try The Burger Rebellion for gourmet burgers, Mike's Seafood for fish and chips close to plenty of picnic spots and for cafes both Bandwagon and The Co. Cafe are winners.

Shopping:

Between Settlement City and Port Central all the major retailers are covered. There are plenty of boutiques for clothing and homewares in the main streets.

Markets:

Markets are held most weekends. Check guides on arrival.

Day trip:

A trip out to Laurieton is definitely worth the half hour drive. Rainbow Beach is patrolled and the nearby sports and recreation club has a bistro with beach views.

Other things to do:

Wineries, fishing charters, horse riding, cinema, hydro golf & bowling.

Accommodation:

There is tones of accommodation in Port Macquarie and lots in the CBD. Do your research to suit your needs. We've stayed at Macquarie Waters and Port Pacific Resort and loved it. Also the caravan park cabins look great and are on our future wish list.

All in all, Port Macquarie is a great location for families and singles alike all year round but the town really shines in the warmer weather!

Helpful hint: many restaurants are closed on Sunday nights so make sure you check beforehand.

Store Edit: Building a capsule wardrobe at Forever New

Welcome to my new series of blogs 'Store Edit' where I pull together my favourite pieces from my go-to stores. Forever New is always top of my list for timeless pieces that age well - in particular, I have about seven of their blazers on high rotation in closet. Also, if you've been here for more than five minutes you'd be well aware that I am a fan of a monochrome palette and a capsule wardrobe that works for you. A little black dress, versatile heels, structured blazer, neutral accessories and classic basics can make getting ready each day enjoyable rather than utter torture. Why I don't post photos of my kids online

There is a lot of controversy today with new advice suggesting we should ask our toddlers permission before posting photos online. While I think that is all kinds of ridiculous and the decision belongs to parents and no one else I do get asked often why I don’t share images of Daisy and now also Lucas on social media.  I was an early adopter of social media and managed accounts way before it became a job title. I’ve seen the good, the bad and downright ugly. Something that can form amazing communities can also wreck people’s lives in more ways then one. Before I had the kids Steve and I discussed what our decision would be in terms of social media. At first he didn’t mind either way but as time has gone on he is totally on board with maintaining their privacy. One question I’ve been asked was, ‘Do you not take photos of your kids? Of course I do. The photos I do post are usually just the bloopers from the 255 I’ve taken of their faces. My iCloud has about 10 000 photos a

Why we prioritised lifestyle when choosing a house

When we started looking at available houses last year, our requirements were not diva like. Enough rooms to have a guest room/study, garage for both cars and ABSOLUTELY no stairs. There were a few places that fitted the bill house wise but the locations were a bit isolating considering I have two babies and know very few people. Also, hubby would have a minimum 40 minute drive for work. So here we are in a house close to shops, parks, family and Steve’s work. We’ve stored some furniture, the kids rooms are doubling as guest rooms and I’ve given up a gym membership for a staircase. I am actually enjoying the downsize, less to look after and I’m learning to deal with the stairs. During the day, we only go up for Daisy’s nap, otherwise I have everything from changes of clothes for all three of us to extra phone chargers all downstairs. We have safety gates in all the places and a cute cupboard under the stairs for all the Harry Potter fans. The concessions we’ve made house wise are made
