The Baby Budget - How to save money for when bub arrives

A new bub in the house and a single income mean that being thrifty has become my number one priority (well one on them).

Here are my tips for saving money while ensuring your new addition has everything they need.

Disclaimer: In no way should this be taken as financial advice. You should contact a professional financial adviser or institution for your own circumstances.

  • Reducing debt is critical. Before bub arrived we worked hard to ensure there were no outstanding credit card debts. This was our priority before growing the emergency fund.
  • Lists, lists, lists!! I love a good list and make one for every area of life admin. Early on in my pregnancy we wrote a list of everything we would need. Every few weeks we picked up one or two things as we had the money to pay for them outright.
  • Meal prepping. I invested in a hefty supply of plastic containers and made extra large batches of soups, savoury mince, bolognaise sauce and stews that I labelled and froze.
  • Systematic bill payments. My husband and I have a system when a bill arrives. We have a clip on the fridge and each bill is filed in order of due date. I went through and started making small fortnightly payments wherever I could to reduce times where we'd have large chunks of money required at one time.
  • Buy baby clothes on sale and accept hand-me-downs. I brought very few full priced items instead I stocked up in online sales, used discount codes and spent countless hours picking through sales racks. We also accepted second hand clothes from friends and family. Note: buy different sizes in end of season sales - you'll be needing them before you know it.
  • Do your research on big ticket items. We were very fortunate to be given a second hand cot and change table (with chest of draws underneath) and replaced the mattress. Compare stores online and don't be shy to ask if they price match. I read reviews online before going in to try out the pram I had my eye on. I also brought a pram that is compatible to add a second seat if we have the need down the track. Note: Always ensure all products comply to Australian Standards especially when looking at second hand items.
  • Our biggest tip? Try to use cash instead of plastic. I use sandwich bags above to divvy up the cash I want to spend. Sure it never works 100% to the dollar but it keeps me accountable and I know what I'm spending. I have four each with the fortnightly amount written on the front - petrol, food, Daisy and play money.

Store Edit: Building a capsule wardrobe at Forever New

Welcome to my new series of blogs 'Store Edit' where I pull together my favourite pieces from my go-to stores. Forever New is always top of my list for timeless pieces that age well - in particular, I have about seven of their blazers on high rotation in closet. Also, if you've been here for more than five minutes you'd be well aware that I am a fan of a monochrome palette and a capsule wardrobe that works for you. A little black dress, versatile heels, structured blazer, neutral accessories and classic basics can make getting ready each day enjoyable rather than utter torture. Why I don't post photos of my kids online

There is a lot of controversy today with new advice suggesting we should ask our toddlers permission before posting photos online. While I think that is all kinds of ridiculous and the decision belongs to parents and no one else I do get asked often why I don’t share images of Daisy and now also Lucas on social media.  I was an early adopter of social media and managed accounts way before it became a job title. I’ve seen the good, the bad and downright ugly. Something that can form amazing communities can also wreck people’s lives in more ways then one. Before I had the kids Steve and I discussed what our decision would be in terms of social media. At first he didn’t mind either way but as time has gone on he is totally on board with maintaining their privacy. One question I’ve been asked was, ‘Do you not take photos of your kids? Of course I do. The photos I do post are usually just the bloopers from the 255 I’ve taken of their faces. My iCloud has about 10 000 phot...

Life Update - Hello 2020

A new year, a new bub and a new home. To say life has been busy is an understatement. We welcomed baby number two late November (I’ll post Lucas’s birth story soon) and from then on it was a whirlwind of newborn life, Christmas shopping and preparing for the move. We’ve also rented out on house in Newcastle so we had all the jobs associated with that as well. Daisy enjoyed and understood Christmas way more than expected and Lucas fortunately is thriving in a somewhat chaotic environment. The house is Sydney is nice but smaller so we’ve been busy trying to make everything fit and get some routine in place. Steve likes the new posting and the quick drive to work. As for me, my uniform consists of a mum bun and tights most days and I do the silly things like putting clothes in the washing machine but not turning it on. I have study that needs to be finished, events on the calendar and a plan to reclaim my health this year. I hope to grow the blog as well as producing more social me...
