Daisy's Birth Story

At 3:15am on Friday 3rd August 2018, the moment had arrived. I had gotten up to go to the toilet and felt a gush of fluid. It wasn't huge so I tidied myself up and laid in bed for about twenty minutes. I was a bit lost as to what to do next. I didn't have any contractions and there was no more fluid. I pondered the big questions, "am I in labour?", "should I ring the birth suite", "should I wake Steve up or let him sleep a bit longer?". My questions were answered when along came a second gush and I shook him softly to wake up. Despite being 40 weeks and 3 days he still thought I was joking when I uttered the old "my waters have broken," with a big grin.
Arriving at the hospital we realised I hadn't taken my 40 week bump shot.
The birth suite advised to take our time and then head in as I would have to be induced within 24 hours of my water breaking. We both had showers, jumped in the car and arrived at the hospital at 6:15am. An examination proved that yes indeed my waters had broken and with no signs of progression I would be induced as soon as possible. Problem was there was a huge backlog and with no other medical concerns I was last on the list. We were given a room and left to our own devices. About this time my waters started to continuously leak and in rather large volumes. This wasn't something I knew would happen and I went through all the clothes I had packed by about midday. I even did the whole movie scene favourite leaving a puddle in the cafeteria.
By late afternoon I had been moved to another room and told my chances of being induced before the next day were minimal and to get comfy for the night. I had a few contractions but nothing that progressed into labour. At around 2am we were woken by a midwife letting me know my induction had been scheduled - right away!
By 2:30am the drip was in and it was all systems go. I got to 5cms before making the decision to proceed with an epidural and finally got some rest. For me, the procedure was smooth sailing but just before the needle was inserted into my back Steve's lack of food and sleep caught up with him and he was ordered by the midwife to take a seat and supplied with a meal.
By mid-morning I was given the all clear to start to push. After an hour the doctor returned to say "ah no, no pushing yet, you're not fully dilated,". We'd later find out that this was due to the fact bub was laying with her head to the side.
Two hours later, we were off again. This is where it all gets a little bit blurry. There was a McRoberts Maneuver to get her into the right place, an episiotomy, a failed vacuum suction, successful forcep delivery and a post-birth haemorrhage.
We forgot to use the pretty matching swaddle and headband I'd been saving since February and only remembered to snap a few photos after being prompted by a midwife. But she was here, she was healthy and I had done it!

Store Edit: Building a capsule wardrobe at Forever New

Welcome to my new series of blogs 'Store Edit' where I pull together my favourite pieces from my go-to stores. Forever New is always top of my list for timeless pieces that age well - in particular, I have about seven of their blazers on high rotation in closet. Also, if you've been here for more than five minutes you'd be well aware that I am a fan of a monochrome palette and a capsule wardrobe that works for you. A little black dress, versatile heels, structured blazer, neutral accessories and classic basics can make getting ready each day enjoyable rather than utter torture. How we got baby to sleep through the night* **

Back when all I could do was imagine her sleeping there.  *we have no freaking idea. This post gives no real advice and is not selling a sleep program. It is purely a recount of my experience so far. ** Daisy is sleeping through at the moment. She is not teething yet but she is about to enter a leap. We are by no means under the illusion that this is forever. Daisy sleeping through the night happened by accident. We just woke up one morning and realised that she hadn't woken up. Cue the diving out of bed to check she was still breathing. We stood at the cot and grinned at each other for a really long time. The next night it happened again. The third night, she woke us up. "But Daisy," I said, "you sleep through now,". She had a bottle and went back to sleep. We haven't really worked at setting a routine but fell into one anyway. She has a bath every night, a bottle and then is either rocked to sleep or placed into her cradle in our room awake but sl...

Why I don't post photos of my kids online

There is a lot of controversy today with new advice suggesting we should ask our toddlers permission before posting photos online. While I think that is all kinds of ridiculous and the decision belongs to parents and no one else I do get asked often why I don’t share images of Daisy and now also Lucas on social media.  I was an early adopter of social media and managed accounts way before it became a job title. I’ve seen the good, the bad and downright ugly. Something that can form amazing communities can also wreck people’s lives in more ways then one. Before I had the kids Steve and I discussed what our decision would be in terms of social media. At first he didn’t mind either way but as time has gone on he is totally on board with maintaining their privacy. One question I’ve been asked was, ‘Do you not take photos of your kids? Of course I do. The photos I do post are usually just the bloopers from the 255 I’ve taken of their faces. My iCloud has about 10 000 phot...
